Sweeney Todd in KC

The Kansas City Repertory Theatre is presenting its annual musical, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” Artistic director Eric Rosen will direct Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award winning musical about a vengeful London barber who teams up with a deranged cook to create meat pies with a secret horrific ingredient. Sweeney Todd will be presented from March 23 through April 15, 2018, in the Repertory’s Spencer Theatre. Since the play debuted on Broadway in 1979, it has had many New York revivals (including some that opened off-Broadway) and a film adaptation by Tim Burton starring Johnny Depp in 2007. Sweeney played by Tally Sessions wanders London only to finds himself at his abandoned and presumably haunted parlor located above a failing restaurant. The restaurant proprietor is an eccentric woman named Mrs. Nellie Lovett played by Ellen Harvey. Sweeney Todd is an epic of a musical thriller that is probably most appropriate for adult audiences. Eric Rosen directs the musical and shows us how restrained direction and limited radio controlled set pieces allow the audience to imagine Victorian London on a limited physical space.
