Removing Your Dental Discoloration

September 2, 2021

When you have stains on your smile, this could mean embarrassment with your appearance. To help offer dramatic results, often in as little as one visit, we could offer professional teeth whitening. In today’s blog, your Kansas City, MO, dentist talks about three Opalescence teeth whitening systems and discusses which one might be right for you.

In-Office Whitening

We have an option that allows you to obtain a smile that is several shades bright in only one visit. When you arrive, we will examine your smile to assess the cause and extent of your discoloration. From there, we will decide the best option to brighten your teeth. With our in-office procedure, we place a protective covering over your lips and gums. A powerful bleaching gel is then applied to the surfaces of your teeth. The bleaching gel doesn’t rely on a bright and uncomfortable light to be activated, instead a chemical process starts braking up stains and offering a brighter smile, all in as little as one hour. This is a great option for people who need results fast, for a job interview for example.

At-Home Disposable Trays

We also have an at-home option that is good for most stains, and is far more powerful than the over-the-counter options. We send you home with unique disposable trays and a powerful bleaching gel. Each day, you will wear the gel filled trays for a set amount of time. Over about a week, this could remove stains and help brighten your smile by several shades!

Custom Trays and Gel

We also have custom trays, which we create based on detailed digital images and impressions we take of your smile. These will be made just for you, and will be filled with a special bleaching gel and worn for 30 to 45 minutes a day, with optimal results available in a week to ten days. This option is also great at reducing tooth sensitivity, and the trays and leftover gel can be used of touch-ups in the coming months.

Masking Permanent Stains

Most of the options above address extrinsic stains, which form on the surfaces of your teeth and could be caused by poor oral hygiene habits, certain foods and drinks, or tobacco usage. But what about stains that form beneath enamel, known as intrinsic discoloration? These could be the result of injury or fluorosis, and we could mask them with either dental bonding or porcelain veneers, offering instant results.
