Old Settlers Festival

The Johnson County Old Settlers Festival is back for its 119th year. That’s right: this festival has been a tradition in Olathe, Kansas, since 1898. The theme of the 2017 edition of this festival is “Super Heroes: Then and Now.” The event is free and it will include musical entertainment, live concerts, a carnival, a classic auto show, an arts and crafts fair, a flower show, a wide assortment of food booths, an ice cream social, horseshoe pitching, and much more. There will be a traditional “Gab Fest with Old Settlers” where there will be a question and answer portion among stories and memories. Traditional activities of the first festival included bubble gum blowing and watermelon seed spitting contests, and sack races. The festival includes the largest parade in Kansas, which will begin at 10a.m. on Saturday, September 9th. Several streets will be closed for the event, and several county officials will be in attendance. Both the Department of Emergency Management and Communications, as well as the Sheriff’s Office will have a booth set up during the three-day festival. There will also be booths for food, games, and arts and crafts.
